Missing Man's Body Found In Wisconsin River

SAUK CITY, Wis. -- The body of a man who disappeared after jumping into the Wisconsin River on Monday night has been found.

Robert Kleist, 39, jumped off the Highway 60 bridge into the river with two friends just after 7:30 p.m. on Monday; however, Kleist never resurfaced after entering the water, according to the Columbia County Sheriff's Office.

Columbia and Sauk county authorities conducted a search for Kleist using boats and divers in the hours after he disappeared.

The toddler had been treading in about four feet of water for a couple of hours in the basement of a burning house. The little boy's mother and two other siblings survived. One brother did not.

Terry Garrison, a tall man with an almost constant grin, is an experienced and well-educated administrator whose management style draws on openness and inclusiveness, say fire and police officials who have worked with him.

On Wednesday, Mayor Annise Parker presented Garrison, 52, who until Monday was interim chief of the obscure Daisy Mountain Fire District outside of Phoenix, as her choice for Houston's next fire chief.

One year ago, the largest wildfire in the history of Los Angeles County began as a tiny spark.

By the time six weeks had passed, 250 square miles of the Angeles National Forest would be blackened, nearly 200 homes destroyed and two firefighters would lose their lives.

To make matters worse the fire took a drastic toll on federal, state and county budgets in the middle of the worst economic times the U.S. has known since the Great Depression.

Kewaunee County milk house fire kills at least 5 cows, destroys barn

MONTPELIER — At least five cows were killed Tuesday when fire destroyed a barn on a milk house in western Kewaunee County.

The total number of cows that died is not known, but the fire at E166 Wisconsin 29, near Kadletz Road, is not considered suspicious, Luxemburg Fire Chief Lew Chateau said in a statement on Tuesday.

Firefighters to take part in emergency response exercises

Chicago MABAS DrillCHICAGO (WLS) -- Firefighters from four states are going to take part in large scale emergency response exercises Thursday in the Chicago area.

 

The idea is to test the mutual aid box alarm system by running a simulated breakout of tornadoes.

 

More than 900 firefighters from Departments in Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana and Michigan will take part.

Each of the department’s 178 sworn firefighters will take part in the simulated training, which started Tuesday on Bay Beach Road at Angie Avenue, Capt. Tony Piontek said. The training helps firefighters get experience with a rare type of fire, Piontek said.

Deadline extended for ground zero responders

NEW YORK -- Thousands of ground zero responders are being given more time to decide whether to settle lawsuits over their exposure to toxic dust from the World Trade Center.

 

Lawyers in the case say they have scrapped a deadline that gave rescue and response workers until Sept. 8 to join or reject a settlement worth as much as $713 million.
