Lightning strikes Franklin home (from franklinnow.com)
Lightning struck a home in Franklin this afternoon, causing an estimated $30,000 in damage. All four people home at the time escaped without injury, an official said.

At about 4 p.m., Franklin firefighters were called to a home in the 8600 block of S. River Terrace that had been struck by lightning, said fire Lt. Lance Braun. The attic and roof were on fire and the four people - three adults and a child - were already out, Braun said.

The building inspector allowed residents to return to the home, he said.

Greenfield, Greendale eye fire merger (from greendalenow.com)
Officials in Greendale and Greenfield have quietly been having discussions on a possible merger of their fire departments.

Greendale Fire Chief Jonathan Cohn confirmed today that the two departments have begun "very preliminary" discussions on the potential of merging their personnel and services.

Neither Greendale nor Greenfield governing bodies have had any formal, public discussions on the matter, he said, but they are approaching the point where they could decide whether to proceed with that.

Merging is a step that many fire departments throughout the state and the nation have already made or at least considered, Cohn said.

"It would be irresponsible of us not to look at this option for delivering services," Cohn said. "There are consolidation models and actual departments that have experienced it that have seen the ability to control costs, reduce duplication (of equipment or training), create efficiencies and increase service levels."

While discussions about merging fire departments have taken place throughout the metro area over the years, there is only one example of Milwaukee County departments actually consolidating: the North Shore Fire Department, which was created in 1995.

West Allis and Greenfield discussed a merger in 1994. Oak Creek, St. Francis, Cudahy and South Milwaukee have floated the idea as well in recent years.

The fact that the Greenfield Fire Department already provides paramedic services to Greendale is also something his department needs to consider, Cohn said, because the majority of calls it receives - about 75 percent - are medical calls, not fire calls.

"What does each department offer in return to make a better fire department? That's where our initial discussions are going to lead us," he said.

Greenfield Fire Chief Russ Spahn could not immediately be reached for comment.

Fire station study called for  (from oakcreeknow.com)
With two of Oak Creek's three fire stations in need of reconstruction, city officials are now one step closer to agreeing on future fire station needs.

The Capital Improvement Project Committee on Tuesday voted to recommend to the Common Council that the city fund an outside study that would help determine whether fire stations No. 1 and 2, which likely will need to be rebuilt in the near future, should be relocated and if a fourth station should be added.

The study would cost an estimated $25,000 to $30,000, and likely would be funded with money that originally was budgeted to repair Fire Station No. 2.

City staff will begin putting out requests for qualifications for the study, and the recommendation should go before the Common Council for a decision at its Tuesday, July 1, meeting.

Two cars destroyed in parking lot fire (from brookfieldnow.com)
Two cars were destroyed and a third was damaged Monday after an electrical malfunction started a vehicle fire in the parking lot of T.G.I. Friday's, 17431 W. Bluemound Road.

Firefighters arrived on the scene at 4:01 p.m. and had the fire extinguished a few minutes later. A 1991 BMW sedan and a Chrysler of unknown year and model were destroyed in the fire, officials said. A Volkswagen Beetle parked next to the BMW suffered around $5,500 in damage.

Investigators said the BMW's heated seats malfunctioned and sparked the blaze.

Chief proposes reorganizing NSFD (from myfoxpointnow.com)
With the departure of Deputy Fire Chief Charles Myers, North Shore Fire Chief David Berousek is proposing a reorganization and succession plan.

Berousek told the North Shore Fire Department Board of Directors today that he and two other department chiefs will be eligible for retirement within three to five years.

Berousek proposed the creation of deputy chiefs, one for administration and another for operations, whom he can train and mentor as possible successors.

The board's Personnel Committee recommended the proposal, but action on the plan will likely come next month.

Myers left the department after being named chief of the Brookfield Fire Department. He started his new job Monday.

Two people were displaced when their home caught fire on the city's south side today, where neighbors alerted authorities to flames coming out of a window of the Milwaukee duplex.

The American Red Cross responded to the scene to help residents with temporary placement after the fire, reported about midnight at 1717-1717A S. 36th St.

Fire department spokeswoman Tiffany Wynn reported today that the residents evacuated before firefighters arrived. There were no working smoke detectors found in the 2 -story home.
